WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) announced she would not support the partisan Continuing Resolution introduced by House Republicans this weekend.
“This is not a ‘clean’ continuing resolution, but a bill that hurts many of my constituents. The Republican CR recklessly cuts billions in funding for critical programs, including veterans’ healthcare and rental assistance,” said Rep. Ansari. “Additionally, its passage would tee up the legislative process needed for Donald Trump and Elon Musk to move forward with ‘reconciliation’ – a mechanism that would allow them to force through bad policies under the guise of passing government funding. I’m voting no.”
As it stands, the Republican CR:
- Cuts $23 billion in veterans benefits, including healthcare for veterans exposed to toxic chemicals and burn pits
- Cuts $2 billion in projects that ensure the safety of our airports, railways, roads, and ports across the country
- Eliminates $40 million in funding for over 70 programs that help children and families
- Cuts over $700 million in rental assistance for working families, meaning that tens of thousands of families could be evicted from their homes
- Funds ICE and mass deportation efforts
- Fully cuts State and Tribal Assistance Grants
- Freezes new investments in the IRS — hamstringing the agency’s ability to work with tax-filers and hurting enforcement of the law against wealthy tax cheats and large corporations
“No one wants to see a Republican government shutdown,” continued Ansari. “I would support a clean, short-term CR that extends government funding at current levels, as long as Republicans give Democrats a seat at the table to negotiate a final spending bill.”
