Slams voucher plan, naming Arizona as example
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) participated in her first hearing as a member of the Education and Workforce Committee and questioned Trump’s Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon. She and Secretary McMahon spoke about school vouchers, with Rep. Ansari sharing their devastating impact on Arizona’s kids.
“Last year, my state was dead last in a list of the Best States for Public Education. We have some of the lowest teacher salaries, low test scores, and the highest student-to-teacher ratio in the country. After years of cutting funding for public schools, Republicans in Arizona have tried to fix our education system with universal school vouchers,” said Rep. Ansari, questioning Secretary McMahon about her support for school vouchers. “77% of those vouchers have gone to students in the wealthiest zip codes in Arizona to fund their expensive private schools and luxury items - all while defunding the public schools the rest of our students attend.”

“It is my pleasure to welcome Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) to the House Committee on Education and Workforce. I know that Representative Ansari will bring a fresh and diverse perspective to our work. Moreover, her leadership experience as Vice Mayor of Phoenix and Freshman Class President for this Congress will be invaluable as we work together to create an economy that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few,” said Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce.
Ansari is one of only a few Democrats to serve on more than two committees and the only Arizonan on the Education and Workforce Committee.
