Ansari Statement on Abrego Garcia Return

WASHINGTON – Today, following reports that Maryland resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia was returned to the United States after being wrongly deported, Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) released the following statement:

“Kilmar Abrego Garcia should have never been deported without due process. I traveled to El Salvador to ensure the Trump Administration upheld a unanimous Supreme Court decision and due process of law by returning Mr. Abrego Garcia to the United States. Because of the pressure my colleagues and I–and Americans around the country–put on President Trump, Kilmar is back on U.S. soil,” said Rep. Ansari. “Everyone deserves their fair day in court. Now, Mr. Abrego Garcia can have his.”

BACKGROUND:

In April, Ansari was part of a group of House Democrats that traveled to El Salvador to advocate for Abrego Garcia’s return and for the Trump Administration to uphold due process. From sharing Know Your Rights information, to demanding answers for immigrants who are showing up to scheduled court appointments and being targeted by ICE, to conducting surprise congressional oversight visits of detention centers, Ansari has advocated for upholding constitutional rights and protecting due process of law since she was sworn in earlier this year.
