Ansari to Attend Munich Security Conference

One of very few Freshman Members ever to attend

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) announced she would attend the Munich Security Conference this weekend.

“As we prepare for a post-Trump world, I’m looking forward to discussions on U.S. leadership, multilateral cooperation, and how we can rebuild our soft power after an era of chaotic foreign incursions mixed with isolationist lies,” said Rep. Ansari. “We need to re-enter global climate agreements, define actual policy related to conflicts with Iran and Venezuela, and work toward the next generation of young, internationally-minded leaders.”

A graduate of Stanford and Cambridge Universities, Ansari has studied foreign relations, nuclear non-proliferation, and international diplomacy. After graduating, she was selected for the John Gardener Fellowship program and began her professional career at the U.N. under Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. As part of the team that delivered the historic Paris Climate agreement, Ansari has continued to advance international climate and diplomatic goals, as a senior advisor at the United Nations, the youngest City Councilwoman in Phoenix history, and currently as the youngest woman in Congress.

Ansari is the first Iranian American Democrat to serve in Congress. She plans to attend the conference regardless of DHS funding operations in the House, and has vowed previously not to vote for any legislation that includes funding for ICE.

“We cannot be the world’s police when a U.S. federal agency is kidnapping people and torturing them in detention centers,” continued Ansari. “Domestic immigration policy is foreign policy, and Trump’s cruel detention practices shape how the world reads our values. When the U.S. dehumanizes people in detention, we undermine our human rights credibility abroad, strengthen authoritarian narratives, and fuel further displacement and desperation.”

At the conference, Ansari will speak in panels on topics ranging from climate leadership, rebuilding trust with NATO, and rebuilding the world order for the next generation.
