Ansari is first and only Iranian American Democrat in Congress
WASHINGTON – Today, following confirmed reports of Israeli military action against targets in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Representative Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) released the following statement:
“I personally know how depraved and corrupt the Islamic Republic regime in Iran is. The Islamic Republic must never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons and the current brutal regime must be replaced. Iranian people, who have suffered for more than four decades at the hands of this regime, deserve democracy and freedom. I do not want to see further regional escalation that could lead to U.S. military action. De-escalation now is imperative to avoid a catastrophic war.
“I’m truly disheartened to see diplomatic efforts fail. Donald Trump is a failed negotiator who has completely lost control and credibility in every region in which he claims to be a peacemaker. Trump cannot and must not exploit this moment to justify authoritarianism and continue his reckless power grab. As reports come in and we learn more, the safety of U.S. forces and personnel in the region, as well as the protection of all civilians in the region, security for Israel, and nuclear nonproliferation, are my primary concerns.”
Ansari is the daughter of Iranian immigrants who fled the country as a result of the 1979 revolution.
